cataBy: Catalina D’Achiardi-Ressler, Ph.D.
Kuder, Inc. Senior Vice President of Research and Development

Achieving success in the workforce requires the right choices, tools, and information. Kuder Journey is an effective solution to help postsecondary students and adults plan for a career, make a career change, and keep their career on track in an ever-changing national economy.

This article is the final in a series in which we highlight the customized features that are available for nine different adult user populations in Journey*. It is our hope that this information will enable practitioners to better serve their adult populations when using the system.

Pathway: Adults With Work Experience Wanting to Explore a Change to an Entirely Different Occupation

Adults with work experience who are looking to explore a change to an entirely different occupation will find the following options in their customized menu in Journey.

Enter Assessment Scores
Users may enter the scores of assessments that they have previously taken in print form by entering their scores from score reports. Users may then view occupations suggested by these assessment results.

Join Professional Associations
Having an effective interview is essential to getting a job, and first impressions are very important. In this area, users may search for professional associations related to their field that can help them network, stay current, and discover new opportunities.

Learn How to Find Job Openings
This feature enables users to explore the variety of ways in which they can find job openings and begin to apply. Users may select from a list of options, including “Develop a Job Network of Family, Friends, and Acquaintances;”  “Attend Job Fairs;” “Call Potential Employers;” and “Answer Newspaper Ads” to discover the many approaches that can be taken to find job openings.

Search for Jobs on Internet Sites
Here, users may browse recommended Internet sites for job openings in their areas of interest and experience, based on their own favorite occupations.

Research Employers
Users will discover tips and advice on how to research potential employers online and through direct communication in this feature, which also includes a targeted list of online resources through which to research employers.

Pathway: Ex-Offenders

Ex-offenders face a unique set of challenges when they endeavor to enter the workforce in the free world. Below is a list outlining the actions that have been customized for this population.

Search for Occupations by Holland Code
Dr. John Holland, a well-known career theorist, defined six different personality types, usually expressed as a three-letter code. If users have taken the Self-Directed Search, the O*NET Interest Profiler, or selected their own code in an informal activity, they may enter it in this area and receive a list of suggested occupations.

Find Supportive Organizations
This feature enables ex-offenders to search their state for government and community organizations that specialize in helping ex-offenders enter the employment network.

Résumé tips and Sample Résumé for Ex-Offenders
Ex-offenders benefit from having résumés that show how they have been rehabilitated as well as their skills and qualifications. Users can view a list of résumé tips tailored to ex-offenders, as well as a sample ex-offender résumé.

Additional Resources
Journey provides ex-offenders with a link to The National Resource Center on Children and Families of the Incarcerated (NRCCFI) at the Family and Corrections Network web site.

Find a Certified Counselor
Ex-offenders who are seeking employment in the free world may find it beneficial to contact a certified counselor in their area to aid in their transition. The National Board for Certified Counselors is an independent credentialing organization with a web site that enables users to identify certified counselors by name, location, and/or area of practice.

Find a Nearby Career Center
This tool provides users with a direct link to workforce services in their neighborhood or across the country on the CareerOneStop web site sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration.

Find a Temporary Job
This feature links users to the Goodwill web site, where they can look for a temporary job that will help enhance their skills, prepare for a full-time position, or make an easier transition into the workforce.

Find Organizations in My State that May be Able to Help
A link is provided to enable ex-offenders to search state-specific governmental agencies and community-based organizations to assist them with criminal records, practitioners, researchers, and policymakers.

*There is an additional pathway in Journey: Adults With Work Experience Seeking a New or Better Job in the Same Occupation Within Their Company. This pathway may be customized for individual corporations upon request. To learn more about this option, please contact us 877.999.6227 or support@kuder.com.
