• Share your ambitions for the future with your children but allow them to express their direction.
• Children need to know what is involved in reaching their career goal. Help your child understand that becoming a veterinarian requires much more than loving animals.
• Don't pressure your child to make a career decision before they are ready. The younger the child, the greater the need to explore careers in many different areas.
• Interests are the number one criteria when choosing a career. Encourage your child concentrate on interest areas and then plan how to obtain the skills necessary to reach a goal.
• Self-concept plays an important role in career decision-making. Help your child identify the good things you see in him/her and your hopes for his/her future.
• As adults we know that our work impacts many roles – parent, spouse, homemaker, citizen, etc. Share this with your child. As children get older, they begin to develop "work values" which ultimately determine satisfaction in work.
• Today training or education after high school is almost essential. There are at least nine different pathways to take ranging from apprenticeships to four–year degrees. Encourage your child to pursue the pathway that is best for them and their goals.
