Dr. JoAnn Harris-Bowlsbey, executive director of product development for Kuder, received an honorary Doctor of Letters from McDaniel College on May 21, in recognition of her groundbreaking work in the field of career development.


Harris-Bowlsbey, who completed much of her early work on the McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College campus, began her career as a high school counselor and director of guidance and later worked as a college professor before serving as developer of the computer-based career planning system DISCOVER® and executive director of the ACT® Educational Technology Center.

Since joining Kuder in 2005, Harris-Bowlsbey has worked extensively with state and labor departments as well as ministries of education and labor in the conceptualization and implementation of localized education and career planning systems.

Her accomplishments include authoring Direct Your Future™, Take Hold of Your Future™, Kuder® Career Development Facilitator Training, and Kuder Career Advisor Training® curricula as well as countless localized versions for clients worldwide.

Harris-Bowlsbey is a past president of the National Career Development Association and recipient of its Eminent Career Award. She has authored and co-authored many journal articles and textbooks, including Career Interventions in the 21st Century (Pearson).

“JoAnn's contributions to the development of the Kuder Career Planning System® have assisted in making Kuder the global authority in career guidance and education,” said Kuder President Phil Harrington. “This honor is certainly well deserved!”

“This honor came as a capstone to a long, fulfilling career – one in which I have been able to provide career guidance assistance to millions of students and adults throughout the world,” said Harris-Bowlsbey. “I'm grateful for the opportunity I've had to serve in this way.”

The honorary degree was conferred at McDaniel's 146th Commencement ceremony in Westminster, Maryland. Harris-Bowlsbey's longtime friend and fellow Kuder research faculty member Jack Rayman was in attendance.
